Story comment will be the main subject added -- but just a touch. I'm in the process of doing another fairly sizeable book (with Dr. James) that covers the whole of his writings. A general survey hasn't been published since 1987, so it's about time.

Sorry to hear about your medical problems, but glad to know your better.
Vol 1 sits lonely on it's shelf and awaits it's twin or triplits as the case may be.
I would be glad to pay for a 3rd vol if it told more about RAH's writings.

Good to know. A lot of people did complain that volume 1 didn't have enough material about the stories, so that will be the first thing to go in -- but it won't in that case be "restoring" material, as I didn't write any in the first place. Albert Bigelow Paine could get away with a 4 volume biography of Twain in 1920, but in 2013 or 14 or 15 or (god help us!) 16, maybe not.

An informal and thoroughly unscientific poll of Volume I biography readers tells me that the idea of putting lots of material back in and splitting into Volumes II & III has overwhelming support!

Glad to hear the work is moving forward again, however slowly. Like so many, I am waiting for Volume 2 as patiently as possible for a 60+ year old who has been a Heinlein Fan since age 10 or there abouts. Like so many high tech geeks, I took my imprint from Robert's works and have spent my life pursuing the kinds of things he dreamed of before I was born, like, for example the cell phone he put in Grandpa's pocket in Podkayne of Mars.

Very kind of you to say so. I don't see, though, why footnotes couldn't be done on a Kindle -- just treat them as hyperlinks. In fact, the whole question of foot- versus endnotes is moot in electronic media. Placing them at the foot of the page is the closest thing to a link that could be done in hardcopy print -- but e-text doesn't have the same limitations.

The editor, David Hartwell, has broached the subject of splitting the second volume into two -- I suspect so that we can get volume 2 out expeditiously. Well see what eventuates.

Well Bill, I just read this incomparable book of yours for the third time during one long series of airplane flights, and it seems better each time I read it. I hope you can get the second volume out someday soon...

BTW, I understand what they are saying about footnotes versus endnotes, but footnotes are impossible on a Kindle, which is my preferred reading mode. However, I would have preferred the endnotes to have appeared at the end of each chapter individually.

BTW, the photos you dwalnood from the online Heinlein Archives won't be as pretty as those on the television program. They will be lower resolution and will have a visual watermark across them, but there is still a treasure awaiting you there. My personal favorite is .
