Non-Hugo Winner –

As is probably well known by now, Learning Curve did not win the Hugo Award at Renovation this year, losing to Chicks Dig Time Lords. Unfortunately I was already ill with what turned into a full-blown attack of Diabetic Ketoacidosis, so I did not participate in any of the *festivities* and went into the hospital as soon as I got home (and had a transmetatarsal foot amputation).

I haven’t had a chance to analyze the balloting, but the voting was apparently close; perhaps their Twitter campaign six weeks ago pushed them over the top.

Michael and I wish you a speedy recovery!

My best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. I think your book was more deserving of a Hugo th an any other non-fiction book of this or any other year. Perhaps the younger generation doesn’t understand the importance of Heinlein. Hope to see you soon.

Thank you very much, Dr. E. There are certainly differences in styles of fandom at various times, and the Hugos always reflect that. This was the Dr. Who year. Also, of course, a work of scholarship is always a long shot.

  3. I was shocked and saddened to read this news — particularly so soon after having a pleasant conversation with you at Renovation. May your recovery be swift and complete.

Thank you for your good wishes. It did come on very suddenly.

Incidentally, did you notice that on Friday, which was my first day at the con, you and I were again dressed similarly? Not as close to identical as we were at CapClave, but, still, it’s Com-zic.

I plan to attend the 2013 Con (it would be my first) and discussions are already underway with my Network of Minions on how to assure that V. 2 finds it’s rightful place as The Winner.
